Murray-Darling Basin Commission
Review of Leadership Program
The partners
The Murray-Darling Basin Initiative is a partnership between communities and the Australian, New South Wales, Victorian, South Australian, Queensland and Australian Capital Territory governments.
The project
The Murray-Darling Basin Initiative is the largest integrated catchment management program in the world. The Initiative is a partnership between governments at all levels and the community which has been established to give effect to the Murray-Darling Basin Agreement (1992). The Initiative, recognizing the importance of capacity building to resolve key issues in the partnership, supported the setting up of a Leadership Program to bring about measurable change in natural resource management.
In early 2005 the Murray-Darling Basin Commission requested an external review of their Leadership Program's contribution to the Murray-Darling Basin Initiative and its effectiveness in building future human resource capacity. An essential component of the review was to develop a comprehensive stakeholder engagement and consultation process which would capture a wide cross section of views.
We reported that the review found that the Leadership Program should be continued with additional support activities, be part of an integrated capacity building plan for the Basin, and be funded by a significant sponsorship component to build greater commitment to the program from across the Basin communities.
Our role
We were engaged to facilitate the independent review of the Leadership Program and consultation process to ensure that all key stakeholders were fully engaged.
The findings of this review have been accepted and implementation plans are being developed by the Murray-Darling Basin Commission.
